Fencing Federation Removes Restrictions Participation Rights for Russian, Belarusian Athletes

(MENAFN) The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has announced the removal of all restrictions related to the Ukraine conflict that had been imposed on Russian and Belarusian fencers, allowing athletes from both countries to compete under their national flags and anthems.
According to the federation, the new policy will take effect at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Hong Kong, scheduled to take place from July 22 to July 30.

Explaining the decision, the organization stated: “The decision reflects the FIE’s commitment to the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter, including non-discrimination, equal treatment, and the universality of sport.”

Restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes were widely introduced across international sports following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022. Many federations suspended competitors from the two countries, while others later adopted compromise measures allowing participation under neutral status.

In fencing, athletes from Russia and Belarus were permitted to return to individual international competitions as neutral participants in 2023. Restrictions on team participation were subsequently eased in late 2025, paving the way for the latest decision restoring full eligibility.

The FIE's announcement is part of a broader trend among several international sports organizations that have recently reconsidered earlier bans.

Last month, reports indicated that the governing body for international gymnastics approved the return of Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to global competitions after an extended absence. The move made gymnastics one of several Olympic sports to restore participation rights under national representation.
