Lukashenko Urges Macron to Lead EU–Russia Dialogue on Ukraine
Speaking to journalists, Lukashenko referred to a recent phone conversation with Macron, during which he reportedly suggested the possibility of a meeting involving himself, Macron, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Minsk to discuss pathways toward de-escalation.
According to Lukashenko, Macron did not dismiss the idea outright but indicated he would need to consult with other European leaders before considering such a step. Lukashenko urged him to take initiative, portraying him as a key figure capable of shaping Europe’s diplomatic direction.
The Belarusian leader argued that direct engagement between major stakeholders remains essential, suggesting that leadership from within Europe could help revive stalled communication channels with Moscow. He also commented on broader EU frustrations regarding limited influence in negotiations that have increasingly involved external mediators.
EU officials have previously expressed concern that European voices are not sufficiently represented in discussions involving the United States and Russia. At the same time, internal divisions within the bloc have complicated efforts to designate a unified representative for potential talks with Moscow.
Separately, Lukashenko addressed concerns about Belarus’s role in regional security, rejecting speculation that Minsk is preparing for involvement in wider military escalation. He also dismissed interpretations of recent joint military exercises with Russia as signals of offensive intent.
The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic uncertainty surrounding future negotiations over the Ukraine conflict, with competing proposals and limited direct engagement between key European and Russian leadership figures.
