Putin Discusses Ukraine War Progress, NATO Tensions

(MENAFN) During a press interaction while visiting Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed a range of topics, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, relations with NATO, and recent regional security incidents.

He suggested that the Ukraine conflict is gradually approaching its conclusion as Russian forces continue military operations across multiple fronts. However, he cautioned that setting a precise timeline would be “unwise,” emphasizing uncertainty despite what he described as positive battlefield developments. He also noted that although some communication channels with Western counterparts remain open, formal peace negotiations are not currently taking place.

Putin stated, “The situation on the battlefield gives reason to believe that (the conflict) is drawing to a close.”

He added that discussions about restarting negotiations have emerged in parts of Europe, even as diplomatic efforts stalled in 2022. According to his remarks, some European officials have begun reconsidering engagement with Moscow.

He also firmly rejected accusations that Russia has hostile intentions toward NATO or European Union member states, calling such claims “brazen lies.” He reiterated the position that Russia’s involvement in Ukraine stemmed from what he described as the failure to implement the 2014–2015 Minsk agreements involving Minsk agreements and the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The president also commented on allegations surrounding a drone incident in Romania that NATO attributed to Russia, though he did not accept the accusations.

In his broader remarks on Western policy, Putin criticized NATO members for increasing defense spending, arguing that the conflict is being used as justification for what he called “unreasonable” military budget expansions. He urged leaders not to mislead their populations regarding the reasons behind rising expenditures.

Separately, he briefly touched on political discussions in Armenia, a former Soviet republic and long-standing Russian partner, framing them within broader regional geopolitical shifts.
