The latest news from Belarus
Provided by AGPKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking at a press briefing, said Russia holds "serious expectations" for the upcoming summit. He confirmed that the full scope of economic issues on the Moscow-Beijing agenda would be on the table, while emphasizing that bilateral cooperation has long transcended trade and economics. "Relations between Russia and China are very diverse," he said, pointing to deepening collaboration across medicine, culture, and education.
Dismisses Zelenskyy's NATO Warning
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Peskov signaled that Moscow is counting on Washington to sustain its mediation efforts, while offering a sobering assessment of where the peace process currently stands. "The peace process is currently on hold. We hope it will eventually resume," he said.
The Kremlin spokesman reiterated Russia's longstanding position that its military exclusively strikes legitimate military targets inside Ukraine, while counter-accusing Kyiv of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure on Russian soil.
Peskov flatly rejected warnings issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Russia was positioning itself to launch attacks on Ukraine or a NATO member state.
Those warnings, delivered Friday, centered on Zelenskyy's accusation that Moscow is seeking to drag Belarus deeper into the conflict. The Ukrainian president alleged that Russia is weighing military operations launched from Belarusian territory — potentially targeting Ukraine's Chernihiv-Kyiv corridor or, more alarmingly, a NATO ally.
"We know that additional contacts have taken place between the Russians and Aleksandr Lukashenko, aimed at persuading him to join new Russian aggressive operations," Zelenskyy said on US social media company X.
