Kremlin Says Putin Open to Meeting Zelensky Only to Finalize Peace Deal

(MENAFN) The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only under the condition that the meeting is intended to conclude and sign formal peace agreements.

Speaking to state media outlet Vesti, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin has consistently expressed openness to such a meeting. However, he stressed that the outcome and purpose would be decisive.

According to Peskov, “The main thing is the purpose of the meeting. Why should they meet? Putin said he is ready to meet in Moscow at any time.” He further added, “The main thing is that there is a purpose for the meeting, and most importantly, that the meeting be productive, and this can only be for the purpose of finalizing agreements.”

He also argued that any potential meeting would require extensive prior preparation, while claiming that Ukraine lacks “political will” in the current circumstances.

In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters earlier the same day that Ukraine remains open to discussions “at any time,” but emphasized that the restart of negotiations “does not depend on us.”

He said that, in principle, preferred locations for talks include countries where previous discussions have taken place, specifically pointing to Türkiye and the Middle East. He added, “Although, in principle, we are not afraid to meet at any time in any country, except Russia and Belarus, we emphasize this once again. I am sure that the trilateral meeting should be resumed.”

US-mediated negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have taken place multiple times in the past, but the process has since stalled amid the broader escalation of regional conflicts.
