Latvia finishes fence construction along Russia border

(MENAFN) Latvia has finalized the construction of a fence along its border with Russia, marking a major step in reinforcing the country’s eastern frontier and the European Union’s external boundary, the State Property Agency (VNI) announced.

The barrier stretches roughly 280 kilometers (174 miles) and forms a continuous physical obstacle wherever construction was feasible. Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis described the project as a “significant” investment in national and regional security.

“The physical fence along Latvia's eastern border with both Russia and Belarus has been completed. This is a major investment in Latvia’s security and provides critical support to the State Border Guard, which continues to counter organized illegal migration pressure supported by aggressive neighboring states,” Kozlovskis said.

Officials noted that work will continue to integrate smart surveillance technologies, aiming to create one of the EU’s most advanced border protection systems. Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens highlighted that the infrastructure strengthens the State Border Guard’s operational capabilities and enhances protection of both Latvia and the EU’s external border.
